The Faculty of Environmental Studies offers a 10-day program for high school students at our EcoCampus and other locations in Southern Costa Rica. This field course is intensive and rich in experiences that range from food production, forest ecosystems, indigenous issues, Costa Rican history and rural culture and biodiversity conservation. Our program has been designed to provide students with a comprehensive overview of rural Costa Rica, its ecosystems and biodiversity, its communities, culture and livelihoods.

Itinerary Sample

Day 2: Introduction to the Alexander Skutch Biological Corridor: Students will take a guided hike to Las Nubes Rainforest, where they will learn about the biodiversity and human diversity of the area, as well as the history of the Alexander Skutch Biological Corridor.

Each activity has been designed so students will have the opportunity to enjoy beautiful sites and meet local people, so they can have a meaningful contextualized learning experience.

Cost Information

The cost per student includes all in-country transportation, room and board, as well as entrance fees, materials, and activities. Accommodations include a mix of homestays with local families in the Alexander Skutch Biological Corridor, lodges and hotels. Each participant is required to obtain travel insurance and arrange for their own airfare to San Jose and back. Arrangements made outside the program days are each person’s responsibility.

Registration Instructions

This program runs year-round and registering takes about 2 months from start to finish (e.g. if you are planning a trip for March Break, you should start the process in January).

Step 1: Book Travel Date

First, check out the calendar below for availability. Red or yellow dates are booked or pending. Grey dates are open. Then, fill out the following form as we must first confirm availability.

To select the dates, follow the example on the left. Note that these dates must be entered in the form. “Arrival Day” is always on a Friday and “Departure Day” is always on a Sunday. The dates that you need to enter in the form, following this example, are “January 3-12, 2020.”

You will receive an email from us confirming the dates as well as three invoices (deposit, first installment, second and final installment). To save the spot on your preferred date, you need to make a deposit of $500 within 5 business days starting from the date that you receive the email. This non-refundable deposit will save your spot (see cancellation policies and procedures below) and indicates your “official registration.” Once you are officially registered, you can start booking your flights, the closer you book the flight to the departure date, the more expensive the fare is likely to be.

STEP 2: First Installment and Forms

Please download the forms below as they are mandatory to all participants, including teachers. Each participant needs to fill out the forms and have them signed by their parents (if under 18 years of age). The teacher/principal/parent designated as the contact person needs to collect and submit all forms within a month from the “official registration” date (this date will be indicated on the invoices that you receive with the confirmation email):

  • All completed and signed forms submitted to FES Director, Office of Student and Academic Services 4700 Keele Street, HNES 137C, Toronto, ON M3J 1P3
  • Confirmation receipt (copy) of the first installment. Payment is to be made by the school to York University. Payment details will be addressed on the invoice.

STEP 3: Second and Final Installment and Orientation Session

Participants need to attend an orientation session, where program expectations and preparation details are discussed. Parents are welcome to the session. We will coordinate with the school to set this date on the official registration date. The final installment must be submitted before the session.
